 TherapyWorks History
TherapyWorks began as Morro Bay Physical Therapy in 1982 under the ownership of Robert Mach, PT. The office was located at 685 Morro Ave., Morro Bay in what is now part of the medical practice of Patrick Vaughan, MD.
Ross and Debbie Dover, both physical therapists, purchased the practice and assumed management of the office in 1988. Morro Bay Physical Therapy continued in that 650 square foot office for four years.
The practice expanded to an office at 1085 Kennedy Way in June of 1992 (next to Dolly's Donuts). The move was made for the following reasons:
- The need for more space for physical therapy
- The desire to work on preventative as well as rehabilitative therapy
- Morro Bay's need of a facility that would provide a healthy physical environment for former patients to continue on with exercises that would help them complete their rehabilitation.
Therefore they changed the name to TherapyWorks and added a small gym open to non-patients. This community gym was called FitnessWorks. The practice grew from one employee to fourteen at that time. There was a huge jump from 650 to 2225 square feet of office space. To begin the new venture, they purchased new exercise equipment and started to learn about the Fitness industry. Of course they continued to grow their physical therapy practice as well. Soon FitnessWorks and TherapyWorks became a place where people of all ages and fitness levels were welcome to exercise and socialize. Further expansion occurred again in 1998 as they added another 1000 square feet of office space.
All together they were in that location for 11 years (that's 15 overall years in Morro Bay!). There were extensive plans to move to a larger location in 2000. This plan did not come to pass. Many kind people said that maybe this was for the best. Ross and Debbie now believe them and thank them!
Ross casually mentioned to two friends that it was time for another expansion and wished to move to 500 Quintana Road, the former Rite Aid Building. In what now seems like an instant, wheels started turning and the building was secured for the future home of FitnessWorks and TherapyWorks.
It was a challenge to plan this new "Premier Physical Conditioning Facility" and physical therapy office, but Ross and Debbie kept several important factors in mind as they did so:
- Maintain the friendly heart of our business
- Broaden the scope of the therapy and fitness businesses to be inclusive not exclusive. They want to have people of all ages and fitness levels walk in and feel welcomed and appropriately challenged
- Maintain a business that is a large employer in Morro Bay
- Honor the pre-existing members for their long-term patronage
- Help the community beyond the actual exercise and membership with outreach programs
The move to the present location finally occurred on September 3, 2003. Debbie and Ross are ecstatic about this change and hope that you are able to take full advantage of what they offer to both physical therapy patients and fitness members.
